Federal and Maryland Officials Discuss Accelerating Bridge Reconstruction

The talks focused on timelines, cost-sharing, and congestion relief.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy met with Maryland Governor Wes Moore last week to coordinate efforts to expedite reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key (FSK) Bridge and the American Legion Memorial Bridge. Both projects are important to regional transportation and economic activity, and officials said they made progress on accelerating timelines and addressing cost-sharing arrangements, particularly for the Key Bridge replacement.

Secretary Duffy and Governor Moore jointly stated, “We agreed to accelerate the reconstruction of both the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the American Legion Bridge. Specifically for the American Legion bridge, we agreed about the need to speed up the reconstruction and leverage innovative approaches like a public private partnership (P3) that will ensure Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. commuters can soon experience some much-needed traffic relief from the most congested corridor in America. We also made significant progress on cost sharing for the Francis Scott Bridge to ensure fairness.”

The Federal Highway Administration (FHA) has sought public input on expediting the American Legion Bridge project, and agency staff from the federal and state governments will continue refining plans to complete both projects efficiently and within budget.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For leaders in the federal, state, and regional governments as they collaborate on cost-sharing for construction.
  • For the safety of workers and travelers impacted by the prolonged reconstruction and repair of the bridges.
